Now that you have restored your relationship with your heart, gut, and brain, let’s explore the neuroscience underlying two common strategies.
You either try to rely strictly on intellectualizing any problem, great or small, into submission, or you adopt an automatic mindset, such as saying, “Ok, new plan, new life,” without any second thoughts, cravings that disrupt the plan, or experiences of traumatic flashbacks or panic attacks.
Another approach is more about realizing that people who place their intention and attention on mastering their environment rather than themselves also establish greater capacity for future resilience and flexibility.
Neuroscientifically speaking, the cues that trigger a habit may initially be very specific, but over time our habits become associated not just with a single trigger but with the whole context surrounding the behavior. This means the environment links a particular habit to a particular context.
Marketing experts know that the environment can shape human behavior and that many of our daily actions are not deliberate but rather the most obvious option.
We will return to practical exercises that demonstrate the effectiveness of mastering your environment through various sciences, including behavioral kinesiology, EMDR, CBT, and somatic-based interventions such as focused touch, acupressure, and meridian tapping; however, I first want to highlight some common mistakes on the right path so you can better understand the concept Aristotle discusses when he states, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (Aristotle, in Eakes, 2018)
Focused Human attention has been proven to cause charge compression and non-destructive implosion and provide access to the ability to phase lock, making it an essential component of bliss-making. It also has the potential to deviate from the intended course of fractal harmonics. Such an event may result in an explosion of charge or a painful memory overload, leading to a release of charge.
Examples include onychotillomania, onychodystrophy, OCD, neurotic psychodermatological disorders, and many other socially unacceptable actions. These behaviors include nail biting and chronic skin picking, as well as actions like men automatically grabbing their genitals in any environment or picking their noses. These behaviors are all types of focused attention on self-soothing actions, even though they are socially repugnant and can develop into habits and addictions.
The habit starts as a tickle that seeks relief through perfect touch, similar to the sensation of being scratched. Neuroscience has shown that the instinctive desire to scratch induces the tickle, and you can no longer obtain relief from satisfying the urge because it has become part of the perpetually entangled signal. This is called chunking.
Early in the learning process, however, before the behavior is automatic, a signal arises in the basal ganglia region known as the dorsolateral striatum (DLS). The DLS “chunks” the task-related events together so that the brain sees the whole task from beginning to end as one event.
Now, the entire (chunked) tickle scratch reward is represented as a single event within the DLS (dorsolateral striatum), bracketed by the beginning and/or ending neuron activation.
This is a very oversimplified first glance at comprehending how discernment and conscious choice play a substantial role in our attunement to higher consciousness or simply overcoming addiction, anxiety, or other dysregulated, maladapted behaviors.
Over time, the loop of cue, routine, reward, cue, routine, and reward becomes more and more automatic. Once the cue, the routine, and the reward start to happen together, the being (human or animal) that repeatedly experiences the loop begins to cultivate a craving that drives it. Not only that, but the cue and the reward become intertwined until a powerful sense of anticipation and craving causes the same spike in brain activity as the reward, but before the reward arrives. At this point, a habit emerges, and it’s understandable why a gambler might remain seated at the slot machine for an extended period without the satisfaction of winning. Once the gambling habit is formed, his brain is getting the dopamine hit of a reward just anticipating a possible win—even as the wheels are still spinning. Overcoming behavior addictions such as gambling has additional demands similar to disentangling elements of grief, much like deliberately walking away from your best friend or a deeply painful betrayal experience. Discernment and conscious choice play a significant role in our attunement to our own higher consciousness.
We must neutralize the emotional charge and sort through all our longings until we have returned full circle on the spiral, reconnecting with our true selves and remembering who we really are. You can starve the sensation, depleting the impulse by ignoring it, until the urge fades, but it is always lying there, just below the surface, waiting to be reignited by some misguided, unguarded attention. This is why learning to create your own bliss is essential for permanently sorting out addictions and ensuring they become a thing of the past. Then we can complement new behaviors with positive habit stacking.
The way to build positive habits is to make their cues obvious in the environment. Initially, a single trigger begins a habit, but eventually the entire context surrounding a behavior becomes the cue.
1. Remember, it is easier to build new habits in a new environment because you will not be fighting against old cues.
- How can I make it obvious? (Cue)
- How can I make it attractive? (Craving)
- How can I make it easy? (Response)
- How can I make it satisfying? (Reward)
2. And in reverse, or by inverting, we can eliminate habits and behaviors that misalign you with the person you want to be.
3. How can I make it invisible? (Cue)
4. How can I make it unattractive? (Craving)
5. How can I make it difficult? (Response)
6. How can I make it unsatisfying? (Reward)
Of course, learning the hygiene to sustain your appropriate focused attention will serve you best at this point in your healing.
